Liberia: Motorcyclist Union Threatens Suit Against the Government

It is undoubtedly the fastest means of transport in postwar Liberia as a consequence of narrow roads and traffic congestion, but it comes with risk to ride motorcycle which until the Government of Liberia issued a mandate ordering that motorcyclists only ply communities roads was the conduit of transportation for many Liberians.

On a daily basis victims of accidents resulting from motorcycles are rushed to the John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital and other clinics and hospitals around Monrovia and other cities but yet still many ignore the safety concerns since they have to commute from one place to another in fulfillment of their daily routine motorcycle ridding has become a source of employment for thousands of unemployed youth in a country.

In Monrovia and suburbs motorcycles have outnumbered commercial vehicles, as owing a motorcycle has become one of the greatest achievements of many youth and other traders who use motorbikes for commercial purpose with each motorcyclist reporting 500 Liberian dollars an equivalent of US$6 per day to the owner of the motorcycle.

This action of the government was unfair to the many young people who were forcibly put out of job. Do you know how many families are suffering because of this action? We are going to sue the government if she does not reverse her decision and form a dialogue with the Union to resolve some of the safety issues,
