NBC orders radio stations to suspend ban on Nigerian artistes

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has ordered the Broadcasting Society of Nigeria (BON) and the Independent Broadcasting Society of Nigeria (IBAN) to lift the ban imposed on all Nigerian artistes registered with the Copyrights Society of Nigeria ( COSON).
BON had previously imposed a ban on popular Nigerian musicians who are under the umbrella group COSCON because COSCON was demanding that radio stations should pay royalty for airing its members intellectual work. BON accused COSON of arbitrarily imposing fees which are not based on any agreeable and verifiable tariff and standards. BON/IBAN therefore directed all Nigeria radio stations to stop playing music of artistes under COSCON. The ban affected all mainstream musicians like 2face, Dbanj, Psquare, Wizkid and many more.
Finally addressing the issue, the NBC made some pronouncements and ordered BON to suspend the ban: "BON & IBAN recognize that they are to pay artistes royalties, so they are obliged to keep adequate logs of all musical works broadcast by them and make sure they are made available upon request by relevant authorities. All payments of musical copyright royalties shall be made to COSON. A joint committee of NBC, COSON, BON/IBAN will be set up to review all royalty tariffs and ensure they are fair, reasonable and according to standards. To ensure a conducive atmosphere for this committee to do a good job, the ban on Nigerian artistes should be suspended".
