Thousands protest rising cost of living in Kuala Lumpur

Thousands of demonstrators clad in black flooded Independence square in the center of Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur, late Tuesday to protest increases in petrol, electric and other prices.
The demonstrators gathered in defiance of police warnings not to rally and caused a New Year Eve’s performance held in the square by the city to be cut short.
The protest ended peacefully after midnight. Organizers said some 15,000 people attended the rally.
